Program Note: As with most of my works, the music arises from the emotional experience of life. I think of this as a reflection on the passages of emotion — that ebb and flow of the feelings that continually emerge and recede repeatedly throughout life. The music is written to blend the soloist and the orchestra, rather than the traditional role of the soloist being in the forefront. The soloist should seem to emerge from the orchestra in much the way that intense feelings seem to surface from the unconscious, giving voice to our inner emotional currents, and then recede back into the chorus of the subliminal. – RW

### Reviews of In Passages – violin soloist & string orchestra

Paralleling the ebb and flow of emotional states, the two instrumental components move fluidly back and forth, the result a sonic organism as unpredictable in its unfolding as human experience. – [textura](https://www.textura.org/archives/v/va_beneathtide.htm), March 2019, Peterborough, ON, Canada

*In Passages* featuring Mojca Ramušćak on violin, is characterised by emotions and thoughts which rise, complement each other and resolve (or not, as the case may be). The composer uses both soloist and string orchestra to great effect, evoking a mood that is often tender, and at times anxious and slightly disturbing. The writing is assured and I believe this work really does reflect an emotional journey. – by Geoff Pearce [Classical Music Daily: An Emotional Journey](https://www.classicalmusicdaily.com/2019/05/tide.htm), London, England

Rain Worthington’s ten-minute *In Passages* for violin and string orchestra is a sustained, moody beauty, imbued with Middle Eastern melodic melismas and glissandi. – by Michael Schulman, [the WholeNote](https://www.thewholenote.com/index.php/booksrecords2/moderncontempo/29054-beneath-the-tide-a-collection-of-concertos-soloists-croatian-chamber-orchestra-miran-vaupotic), Toronto, ON, Canada

*In Passages* was also another standout piece. It's possibly the most subtle track on the album and is a real mood setter. Beautifully constructed it rewards the listener the more times they return to it. – Darren Rea, [Review Graveyard, Classical Music Reviews](http://www.reviewgraveyard.com/00_revs/r2019/music/19-03-22_beneath-tide.html)

This ten-minute emotional work has the soloist emerge from the string texture with poignant modern lyric lines. The soloist and orchestra have some interplay here as the primary idea works across the strings. The latter provide as sort of sounding board to the soloist in this piece. Violinist Mojca Ramušćak finds just the right tone and balance for this intriguing work. – [Cinemusical](http://maestrosteve.xanga.com/2019/04/05/a-cadre-of-contemporary-concertos/), April 5, 2019
